NKDA to conduct fire audit in housing complexes shopping malls

first_imgKolkata: New Town Kolkata Development Agency (NKDA) has decided to conduct fire audit in all housing complexes and shopping malls in New Town. The decision has been taken following a major incident of fire where several shops had been gutted at a commercial complex in South Kolkata. NKDA will engage an agency which will visit the housing complexes and shopping malls to check the firefighting arrangements, condition of the fire extinguishers and whether fire drills are being carried out regularly or not. The agency will submit a report to NKDA regarding its findings. On getting the report, NKDA authorities will sit with the housing complex residents and shopping mall authorities to create awareness. There are many major housing complexes in New Town. There are shopping malls and offices complexes which are visited by thousands of people every day. The agency conducting the audit report will conduct an on the spot investigation in this regard as well. Senior officials of NKDA said they do not want to scare the residents, the visitors to the shopping malls or the persons attending offices, but it is absolutely necessary to maintain a proper firefighting system in these premises. It may be recalled that more than 40 people had died in a devastating fire that had broken out at Stephen Court in March 2010. In 2018, fire had broken out at several markets in the city. NKDA has also decided to conduct vaccination and sterilisation camps for stray dogs in New Town, in collaboration with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). MPOSTlast_img
