first_imgKolkata: The temperature in the city rose up to 12 degree Celsius on the last Sunday of the year, while on Saturday it had dropped to 10.6 degrees, the lowest of the season so far.The Regional Meteorological Department predicted that temperature may further go up by a new notches from Monday, giving respite to city dwellers from the cold wave condition that has been prevailing in the city and in some other South Bengal districts. Unlike South Bengal, the people in other districts of North Bengal may continue to feel the winter chill as the mercury has already dropped below double digits there. In the past couple of days, mercury had started plunging down, making people feel the winter chill. According to the Met office prediction, the condition is going to improve from Monday. Several parts of South Bengal districts may however witness misty morning, which will clear as the day progresses. “The minimum temperature may slightly go up in the next few days. There is, however, no prediction on whether the cold wave condition has begun a retreat in the South Bengal districts. The winter chill that has intensified in districts including Purulia, Bankura, Birbhum, East and West Burdwan and Midnapore due to the uninterrupted flow of the northwesterly wind, may lose its strength marginally,” a weather official said. Meanwhile, people visited various tourist places across the city in large numbers on the last Sunday of the year. Thousands of revellers started pouring in from various parts of the city and its suburbs from the morning. Alipore Zoo was the destination of choice for thousands. Children clad in warm clothes were found visiting the zoo on Sunday. The zoo has always been one of the major centres of attraction in the city, especially for the children who were seen thronging along with their parents in front of the tiger enclosure and others. Some others were seen standing outside the cages of their favourite animals. Various other tourist spots like Victoria Memorial, Eco Park and Science City also recorded huge footfall.last_img
